Farmall 504 gas tractor

Looking how to contact Owen Aaland, he seems to be the expert and has help so many people with problems or if someone else might know how to replace the o-ring on the eccentric assy. shaft draft control (in the housing below seat) Farmall 504 tractor w/3 pt hitch. Eccentric shaft part # is 389273 R91 and o-ring is # 355967 R1 (this is where the hydraulic fluid leak is). It appears that I need to remove the cylinder and control valve assembly just to get at the shaft. I&T manual not to clear on that. Thanks for your help.

I"m not Owen, but I did this on my 504 last year. You pretty much got it right. Just about everything has to come out. While I was in there, I would replace the O ring and seal on the position control shaft and the draft control shaft. Couldn"t find the seal anywhere except CIH.

I had to replace the same things on mine this last winter. i used a hammer and punch to push the bushing that the oil seal goes in, into the housing to get it out. Then hammered it back in from the outside. Hasn't leaked yet. I also replaced the o-ring on the draft control shaft like tractormanNC suggested. might as well while your in there. Kinda a pain to get in there.

Thanks for the information JHubnuts. How did you get the bushing you drove into the housing back out to drive back in from the outside without removing the essentric shaft, looks like that would be a real pain?

Thanks for the information tractormanNC. After you removed the "innerns" did you have any problems getting everything adjusted when reinstalled? I have the I&T shop service (IH-201) manual, did you by chance use this to make the adjustments and if so did it cover everything? I also would replace the o-ring and backer in the cylinder for draft control if I have to take all that out. Thanks.

You put the eccentric shaft inside the housing and push it into the bushing as you drive the bushing back into the housing from the outside. Be careful to not mar the inside dia. of the bushing or you'll be replacing that new o-ring you just put on again shortly. And don't drive the bushing in to far or all the linkage wont line up right and you'll have to start over by pushing that bushing into the housing to get it out. Hope this helps

Dan,

IH made a service manual that completely covers the 3pt hitch and draft controls. Go to E-bay and get you one of these manuals real cheap. Search.. 504 draft manual.. and you will find 1/2 dozen of these at various prices. This manual is well worth the wait to get and will cover everything in complete detail with pictures. I've done 404, 504 and 606 draft controls with this manual and it is really a useful manual to have.

Thanks to those of you who answered the questions. Most of my experience has been with larger tractors so any reply I could have made here would have been based on looking it up in the manual.

Just wanted to thank you all for your help on the 504 draft control O-ring issue. You all have helped me out very much. I think I am ready to start work on it. Thanks Dan
