I am confused about the oil seal on brake drum on my H.The brakes were soaked in oil.Looked up posts on brakes, found alot of info.I found a seal number on older post, got them from NAPA,but taking old one out I found thier is two in there and I can't find anything in parts book saying if there should be one or two. Thanks Bill

The original seal was very thick and made of leather. The new seals are about 1/3 the thickness of the original, but are made of a material that is far superior. Because the new seals are so much thinner, lots of folks think they need to install 2 seals instead of just one, but that is not necessary. ONE new seal is sufficient.

I'm guessing that a previous owner subscribed to the 2 seal myth.

Rusty is correct. Pulling the old seals out, and cleaning the shaft to metal to be able to see it clearly, is needed. Using a good bright light, see if there are grooves in the pinion shaft. a probe like a dental pick, or wire can be used to "feel" for grooves. A hand lense can also help (I use one to see well close like this (63yrs old)) Grooves allow even new seals to leak. placing the new seal at a depth where there is no groove works. Pack the new seal with grease, and grease the shaft when putting it in. This assures it will have a long life.

One will suffice but I usually stick in 2 on each side since they are so much thinner than the originals.

I run with two. I put grease between the first and second bearing to keep them outside one lubed. I never ringed the first with grease, but I may start. I do usually rub the lip with grease or oil to help it slide on and on first start up.

The bearing shop said it can't hurt to run extra seals if you lube them...then again they are selling the seals.
