706 gas no start

After getting an old H running I started on a 706, it has been sitting for a few years, I drained all the old gas out that I could. Then I cleaned the mice nest out if the air intake. Before it was running off starter fluid for a few seconds but now it wont even do that. I know fuel is getting to the carb, because it will drain from there and the line. Any advice?

The first diagnosis step is to determine if it is getting spark. Pull the center wire out of the distributor cap, and place it (tape is handy) so that it is 1/4" away from the block. Crank the engine watching for spark. it should be bright and Blue, not yellow or thready. If no spark, check the condition of the contact points. They can be cleaned and polished with 320 grit paper, then cleaned with a folded dollar bill. Set them on the high point of the distributor cam at .020" Jim

Hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor and while a helper make's an attempt to start the engine & see if there's good suction. Low suction means low intake manifold vacuum. I would look at the plugs to see if they're wet.

Check your ignition to make sure battery voltage is getting to your coil. Use a volt meter and with the points open you should see voltage on both small terminals. You also need the ignition in the on position when doing bthis. Hal

If you have spark, My next move would be to pull the carburator apart and make sure the float and valve aren't stuck closed. With the newer gasoline I find that I have to do that on about all of my gassers at least once a year.
