Convert M to 12V

Thanks to all who replied to my question on converting a M to 12V. I printed all answers and will save them for the future. It turned out the only thing wrong with my 3 brush rebuilt Gen was the C/O. I jumpered aroung it when I was testing and it did not make any difference in the charge. However after installing a new C/O the gen works fine. The C/O must have been shorted somehow maybe grounded to the case. Anyway thanks again.

cut-out they were common before they started to use a regulator. Simple device just disconnected the batt voltage from the generator so the battery didnt run down when the engine wasnt running. Ive never had a problem with them and have several on my tractors but i do maintain the cables water levl in the batterys and so forth and after 60 pluss yrs they still work just fine.

Cut outs are pretty trouble free but they do rust up and deteriorate over the years. Most common failure is some one manually closes the points to polarize generator or when checking a no charge problem. That is a no-no as you have battery voltage one one side and when generator is not charging producing a voltage you have no voltage on gen side, sooo you get a large arc. When the points come together during normal operation there is very little arcing. And of course, a voltage regulator used with a generator has a cut out also along with the regulating unit.
