Farmall 400 - Smoking on Right side

Dad got the old 400 (gasser) out last night and disked up some food plots. The disk really wasn't much of a load for 400. It ran great, but after talking with Dad after he finished up, he said he noticed some intermittent smoke coming from the right side of the tractor near where the oil filter is. The tractor is all cleaned up, so there isn't a possibility of the engine heating up and burning off oil on the casting. Plus, the tractor never got that warm anyway with the limited use and the small disk.

Is there some sort of overflow tube coming out that side? I can't remember and dont have my manual with me. Just wondered why he'd see smoke in that area of the tractor. Thanks.

(quoted from post at 07:35:26 04/27/12) Probably from the draft tube. Totally normal, they smoked when brand new.

Thanks for the reply Allan. I got the chance to talk to Grandpa about it, and he said it always smoked a little, although Dad never remembers it smoking this much. Said it would puff a little smoke out on the turn and once he dropped the disk, and then clear up a little on the straight aways. It might be a little worn out too, but it's not farming 300 acres anymore. Based on what you and my Grandpa said, I probably wont tear into it to look at the rings. thanks again.

It would have to get a whole lot worse than "a little smoke sometimes" to warrant tearing into it...

MAYBE when the plugs start oil fouling and you can't stand the blue smoke out of the muffler... Not a minute sooner than that, though...
