Tow bar completed

Since I don't know how to weld I bolted this together. I do have a drill press, so that made life easier. The tongue is from a homemade hay wagon running gear and I just borrowed it to put on this. I didn't have room to get a good picture in the shed. The tongue swings up and down in a range of about 4'. Once I learn to weld I will make a better one. All of the bolts are 5/8", so I think there will be enough strength there. I was surprised how easy it was to turn the front wheels with the tongue.

It doesn't need to be pretty to be functional, and it looks like yours will be very functional. Looks quite a bit like the one I built.

Only thing I see that I would change is having a way to either be able to flip it up and then pin it that way so you would not have to bolt and unbolt it all the time or use a hitch pin in place of the one bolt

That's a good idea. I don't intend to leave it on there, I am envisioning it more as something to use if the H breaks down, or if I end up with the 300 at the auction or another tractor that is within range to pick up.

Looks very much like my tow bar - even the finish(!)

Only significant difference I've got a 3/4" hitch pin for the hinge. Thus I can quickly disconnect/remove the bar when I get where I'm going.

A person like me tries to think ahead of them self's so as to make things work in simple ways but also having been a metal fab type person and working with building many thing out of steel that also helps. But then to I have been doing welding since I was around 16 or so and also done it for a living off and on

Pretty nice setup. I want one :)

I would want to see a good grade for the two bolts into the bolster. They are the weakest point in that arrangement and if one breaks you have a free range tractor.

That high attach point has the inherent problem that the towed tractor will try to rise and climb over the tow vehicle if brakes are used hard enough. Generally not a problem, and not sure if (Farmall) brakes could even manage it, but something to be think about. I would expect the more likely issue of the towed tractor front tires getting light and then sliding while braking when turning. Patience is your friend eh!

Should work fine....I would take it to someone who does weld, and have him burn it all together for you...maybe torch off the extra hook looking chunk to neaten her up too. Go slow and it outta work nicely !
