I took my "M" out yesterday with the brush hog hooked up and although it starts in a flash and revs up fine . while mowing there is a miss. unless i'm pulling uphill in 2 ft tall grass then gov kicks in and runs like it should.when I got done mowing and idled down the engine loped really bad..any one have a idea?? I have rebuild carb. new point/cond.new plugs.fresh gas ..thanks geezer

Sounds like a vacuum leak. One way to check for a vacuum leak is to obtain a propane torch (but don"t light it!) and open the valve, and while your engine is missing, move the orifice around the area of your gaskets/fittings on your intake manifold and carburetor. If you notice that it ceases to miss while the propane source is near a particular spot, then you have probably found your leak. Btw, vacuum leaks are worst when at part-throttle. Full-throttle operation lowers vacuum below the throttle butterfly valve, and makes the mixture return closer to normal. Just sayin".

When you rebuilt the carb did you synchronize the carb to the governor ???? and did you check and see how much slop is in the two arms where the gov. spring rides . This is where i would be looking first .
