Changing the filter on my 966 today, pulling old one and found a broken spring (1/4 diameter about 1 inch of one end) and a bout a 1/4 long piece of 1/8 roll pin lying outside the filter screen. Where are these most likely from?

Well all them pieces and extra parts came from the shifter , most likely the range trans shifter . The roll pin holds the cam to the shifter and the spring is from the detent arm. next time ya may find half of the rollers.

I would think, with those parts missing, you would be complaining about shifting problems.

Hard to shift... Won't shift... Floppy range lever...

Then again, I do know people who are so "out of it" that they'll drive 10 miles on a flat tire before it occurrs to them that something MIGHT be wrong.

For reference, the H-N-L-R (aka range) lever on your 966 should snap from position to position, and stay where you put it. If it doesn't, you need to open the range cover and replace that spring and roll pin.

If the range lever snaps smartly from position to position and stays where you put it, those parts are from a previous repair. The likelihood of it being leftover parts from an old repair go up if you just recently bought this tractor.

Well as far as OPENING IT UP . What is needed here is to remove the deck plate and removing the RANGE shift cover and also the cover on the left side of the range trans . Also having the special tool to help with removal is nice to hold the rev. shifter rod . But you can squeak by with a stiff bladed putty knife and a extra set of hands. Get yourself and I T a manual and do a little reading on range cover removal . You do not have to remove the whole deck plate just the smaller one in the center . Myself i always remove the side cover on the left side for two reasons (1) is that i can inspect the rev. shift fork and when ya go back together you know for sure that everything is linen up . IF the tractor is at the correct fluid level in the trans mission there is no need to drain the trans. The only amount of fluid that will come out of the side cover is about 1 gallon , so just place a nice large oild drain pan under the tractor below the cover and it is not a big deal. BUT if you run it over full your going to get drowned . Once you have the cover off you will see what is wrong and with a look at the parts list you will see what you need .

Well, ive had it some time (2 yrs) but that was the first time I raked around in the bottom of the filter housing when I found these.

BUT, Yes it does go in and stay in H L R N and doesnt quite "snap" in but you know it is in when you get it there. This is actually the best shifting IH I have ever owned. It is unreal compared to some I have. newer clutch and it is adjusted exactly right. (from archives the tractor vet's method)

So you think these parts are from earlier? Not worth taking that cover off and looking at? I cannot afford to have it down for long coming soon. thanks

If you fell any detent in H/L or R most likely the parts are left from an earlier failure. It is pretty normal not to find the missing pieces when doing the repairs. Since they will eventually end up in the filter cavity there is not much point in spending a lot of time looking for them.

The cover on the left side, are you referring to the one that is about 12 inches tall and 5-6 inches wide? It seems like that would drain more than 1 gallon of oil? Thank you.
