about a year ago we purchased a 59 model ih 460 utility
it has always been wired with a positive ground
is this correct or has someone hooked it up wrong sometime before we got it? also the serial number has a s y at the end, does andy one know what they stand for
i think that it is not charging right now and the lights and wiring are in bad shape hope to get some help

I think they changed from Positive Ground to negative ground during the production run. (not sure) the following diagrams shaould help. Jim
Wiring

All the 460's were negative ground. The 450 and 350's were changed to 12 volt in mid production but they were still positive ground. I was working at the dealership when new 450's came in until the magnums came out.

Regarding the suffix letters: I have a mid to late '62 Farmall 460. According to the I & T book the "S" indicates "Torque Amplifier" w/provision for 540 RPM Independent PTO. The "Y" indicates Hydraulic Power Supply (12 GPM). If I had to guess I'd say those suffix's are the same for all years in that series. Not 100% on that, though.

I have no clue regarding the positive ground.

thanks for the replies guys i think they will help this is a farm use tractor not a sit in the museum tractor we are raking hay with it right now have a 5 ft rotor tiller and a rotory mower and several quick hitch attachments added a hydralic cylinder to the third link to help lift round bales
thanks again for the help frr wakita ok

You can take the generator and voltage regulator to an auto electric shop and have them bench tested. If one or the other is bad the shop should be able to sell you a new VR and rebuild the genny.

Or you can convert it to an alternator (for a working tractor that would be my choice).

As fas as wiring goes those old tractor were pretty simple. I rewired a 560D for my BIL a few years back. Took all of about 2 hours with me making the wiring harness. Because I had no wiring diagram I took off a wire and replaced it then did the next. Then took and taped up the bundle. Worked for him untill the chrank shaft broke about 10 years later.

It can still charge REGARDLESS if at Pos or Neg ground, its a matter of the genny being correctly polarized and possible issues with ammeter and coil wires maybe needing reversed and if the VR is suitable for the ground polarity used.

If its wired right per the diagrams Jim listed and the genny is correctly polarized but if dont charge, you may wanna take a look at my troubleshooting procedure
