I am concidering painting my 39 H,and Ive been reading the Arcives paint code,When were the Tractor rims painted silver or galvenised. The way I read is they are suposed to be red

Jimmy, The wheels cast were red but the rims were galvenised. Guys painted them silver to keep the same look. Is the engine back together?

Jimmy all one piece wheel/rim for rubber or steel were painted red. I think first farmall with removable split rims galvenized was late
F-20 and F-14 that had cast center. Than in 39" H,M,A,B, oldiron29

Old Iron,I was wondering if there was any written documontaion on how the rims were to be painted,Ive seen 2 peice rims on F series painted red.So im thinking the change took place when the letter series came out, like you said.Is there any place this can be read

Galvanized originally. PPG 8568 gives a nice silver gray color. It is a GM rally wheel color.

Nothing from IH. The rims were galvanized from 1939 until or past the 460/560 series. I don't know about the F series. You will find nothing official, only from the tractor forums such as this one.

The original 1939 tractors were red everywhere, see paint committee decisions, including the order to stop painting the wide bars on the radiator screens of some Farmall tractors aluminium as per the then still un-official treatment on the TracTractors. Further all early publicity photographs show the red rims, even brochures from about 1943 still show the red rims though some obviously latter photographs show galvanized rims. I believe the galvanized rims came some time in the early 1940s.

Athol, would the 39" be all red with rubber tires? or only on steel. I cleaned and painted a set of split rim from a 39" F-20 that were galvenized originaly. I can"t say that of the
F-14 it was painted when I got it. oldiron29

Were the F-20 rim on the tractor originally or fitted later? The early Farmall were on steel but rubber tyres were always an option. The very early Farmalls H and H had 36 inch split rims. The 38 inch drop-centre rims came later. The early W-4 and W-6 had 24 inch split rims (again the standard was steel wheels) and later the W-4 went to 26 inch drop-centre rims

My 1939 Farmall M and 1940 Farmall H both have all red wheels. The M has Australian front and rear wheels and the H has U.S. front rims and Australian cast iron rear rims. My personal taste favours the red rims, but it is probably just a result of what I am used to seeing.

When IH switched to 38" wheels on the letter series, the rims were sourced from outside manufacturers, and were left with whatever finish they came with from the outside manufacturer. Usually that meant galvanized.
