Anyone ever did this with a Cub!

Working on a 1949 Cub that belongs to some friends, one of which has lukemia, and can no longer work on anything, so I have been working on it. What I thought was a rear main turned out to be the trans seal. I have now repalced it, BUT its leaking AGAIN!!!!!! Ive ran it maybe 3 hours since repalcement with no leaks until today. So 2 questions, 1: The sealing surface on the shaft is fine, no wear, but I put a speedy sleeve on it anyways. Im wondering if something internal could be causing it to force the seal to leak, I know doesnt sound like I want it to! I did just notice that it acts like it wants to go into first, but as soon as you let the clutch out, it jumps out. I saw no visible wear, or felt anything wore I could get my hands on. 2: I know I can split at the engine, then take off the torque tube, but has anyone split one at the trans?

I split a Cub lo-boy at the trans once. Never again. Had a bear of a time trying to get the clutch and drive shaft lined back up. Ended up fouling up the rear main bearing seal in the engine AND also ended up removing the torque tube, installing that onto the trans and then slid the tractor back together. Not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying I wouldn't do it that way again if I could help it. Just my 2 cents. Kippster

You probably should have replaced the input shaft bearing as well as the seal. Those input bearings are usually bad on the Cub if they have not been replaced before. Since the tractor jumps out of gear, that makes me think even more that the bearing is bad. You can split at the transmission, but getting the shaft back in the clutch is not so easy. If you do replace the bearing, make sure you get it in correctly. Easy to install backwards and then there is play back and forth in the shaft which causes problems with the shifting.
