Gauges for H

I need to replace all 3 gauges for my '47 H. Ebay sellers have a vast array of prices (and quality, I am sure). Has anyone had experience with the ones made in India? Seems they are cheapest, but are they any good? My tractor will be used only for light farm work.

Get them from Steiner, etc, and make sure the number on the gauge is the same as in the parts book, there is a difference in temp range and oil pressure range. Depending on the seller on fleabay they may not know the difference. I imagine none of these are US made.

I think there are only two manufacturers that make the aftermarket gauges. One of them is a very poor copy, and you can see the difference just by looking. Makes no difference who you buy the gauges from, you will get either that crappy looking one, or you will get the other one.

Don't get the ones that are made in India, if they're anything like the new starter that I got for my H, that I found out was made in India, they'll be pieces of JUNK!

"None are US made". Thats what I was afraid of.
Its a shame we have to put junk parts on US tractors that were made to last 100+ years.
Thanks Ya'll!!

I'm rebuilding a tractor right now and because it's a worker decided to install new gauges. I got VDO's.....good brand......made in India.

Don't know if this is "hype" or what but OEM Tractor Parts in Illinois states in their catalog that they purchase their gauges directly from Rochester Gauge Company in the US and install the correct faces depending on the logo for the year of your tractor. I have bought all of my gauges either from them or NOS ones from various sources when I could locate them. I have been very pleased with the ones I've purchased from both sources. I have no interest in the company but am just sharing info as I have seen the same variations you mention on the majority of those on the aftermarket sources. I have heard the tachometers which are made in India are next to worthless with a very short lifespan and are not repairable with plastic gearing in the enclosed cases. We are probably better having the original IH tachs repaired and reconditioned to new by a repair facility then taking the cheap path with the India imports, Hal.

as commented in earlier reply I also think the gauges that OEM Tractor Parts sells are MADE IN USA. If not they are still the higher quality ones.

I forgot to mention the Rochester Gauge Company was the original supplier of gauges to IH for their tractors when they were originally built. Don't know exactly when their assocaition began as I'm not that familar with IH tractors prior to the letter series models introduced in 1939. Hopes this additional information is of value to you in your decision making, Hal.

I had not considered OEM Company, will try them, thanks.
I could not find that Rochester Gauge Company make any retro products, am I wrong?

Rochester doesn't sell direct. Supposedly they make them for OEM.

I'm sure the reason you don't see Rochester Gauge selling their products directly is their gauges were made to specifications issued by the company installing them on their finished products. I believe they made the same gauges for various companies with different faceplates depending on who they were being shipped too for initial installation. I doubt you will not be pleased with OEM gauges if that is the route you end up going, Hal.

Except their messed up IHC logo.
