Hi Guys... long time no post. I just picked up a international cub lo-boy serial number 3453 J. I think its a 1956 model. I am about to do the evaluation on this and want to know where I should look for freeze issues, drive/transmission issues etc.

Thanks for any input.

Check the engine block for any coolant leaks. I would change the engine oil and check the gear boxes for any water and check their oil levels.
Replace the coolant with a 50/50 antifreeze mix.
Nice looking Cub. Hal

Thanks Hal... 5 years ago you were a help with an A that my son and I did. We are planning on totally dismanteling this and sand blasting it. We just need to know where the major problems could be as we take it apart.

Thanks again

Take a good look at the casting under the radiator. Thats a spot that is prone to cracking if it freezes with just water in the engine. Have a 64 lo-boy that broke there when the temps got insanely cold here in NW PA. This was in the 70's. The tractor had anti freeze in it but evidently not in the right proportions. I took it to a local guy that was known for his welding abilities and he heated it up in a blast furnace and brazed it. Never leaked a drop since. Thats the first thought I had when you mentioned freeze damage. Just a thought. Kippster

Well.. I started evaluating and dont seem to see anay cracks at this point. I want to take this to the sandblaster and am wondering if i can and should remove the radiator. The mounting looks like the casting below is part of the cooling system. There are many bolts holding the radiator to it.. do I dare take this off or am I looking for trouble? It would make cleaning the front of the engine area much easier if it were off.

I used to do custom sand blasting and would NEVER advise sandblasting a tractor!!! A while back a gentleman found sand in scattered throughout the entire airclearner assy. Even though you think you have removed all the sand the paint gun will find more sand to cause problems. Final thought: SANDBLASTING ANYTHING WITH ENGINES AND TRANSMISSIONS IS A BIG NO NO!!!!! Also sandblasting will/can streach/warp sheet metal! Armand

Well... I did an "A" about 5 years ago. I took it all down to the block, tube, rear end, front end etc... I took off carb, air filter, generator, starter etc and sealed up all holes really good. The paint job went well and the finish was excellent. I understand exactly what you are saying and am not disputing your opinion... can anyone else weigh in on this. I am interested in what others have to say.

Thank you for the information

also look over on farmallcub.com
