H starting issues

Got a tough question I have an H that forever has started perfectly on the 6 volt system Last Sunday I tried to start it No spark, put in new points and condensor still no spark, put in a new coil still no spark so I checked with a multimeter, I get power out of the coil to the points, so I diconeected the wire coming from the switch to the coil and hooked a 6 volt battery charger directly to the coil and started right up, while running I reconnected the switch and disconnected the batery charger and it stayed running, after a half hour or so I shut it off and tried to restart it, wont start again hooked up the battery charger and fired right up any suggestions?? I know I have power coming from the switch but is there a specific voltage I should be looking for???

Check all connections from battery through starter switch, ampmeter, igniton switch, coil and dist. Pay special attention to connections on starter switch.[/quote]

Check your voltage drop at the coil when cranking the engine. Since you're connecting the charger directly to the coil it is getting 6 volts. I would also check your battery's specific gravity using a hydrometer. Should have readings around 1.260. Your battery may be getting weak and when cranking the voltage drops to much for the ignition. Hal
PS: Since it stayed running when you reconnected
back to the switch your battery was probably being charged and had enough voltage for the ignition.

I will add that the ignition switch has been noted to go bad. Jump directly from the bat non grounded terminal to the coil to see if bypassing the ignition switch and wires lets it start Jim

Thanks all for your help, I found the terminals on the back of the ameter to be burned and nasty replaced ammeter and crimped new ends on all the wires once again it starts as it should Again thanks to all
