Changing an IH 450 axel?

I have a crack in the axel housing on my 450 and I was wondering if I can just slide the housing off of the tractor and replace it with a new one.
Or will it require removing the inner Bull Gear?

Bull gear can stay in but the bolt and heavy washer needs removed from the inside end of the axle before it will come out. Can be removed through the pto opening after removing the pto.
If lucky the axle will just slide out of the bull gear splines when axle housing is removed with axle. If not lucky axle may need pushed out of the bull gear splines. Helper would make it easier to put back in the splines.

Make sure to make a couple of guide dowels to help support the axle housing when removing and installing. Like Slater says, work through the rear and it will come out fine. Getting it back into the splines is a little more difficult. Over the years I developed my own system and preferred to do it alone. Others don't. I used to lift those off, now days I can hardly lift the axle alone. Couple guys can easily handle it though or a cherry picker.

i just did this on my 450LP and one thing ill tell ya now is get a pack of door/window shims from the lumber yard to stick under the bull gear before you take it loose. if you have a cherry picker, this is an easy one man job. a 4 inch long dowel pin in the very top bolt hole is fairly important to have also, just as Pete noted. ill see if i can round up some pics of when i did it for ya!
