What to do, what to do????

I have the opportunity to purchase a Super C for $500. I don't really need it, but I have always wanted to own one.

The sheet metal looks good, but the tires are marginal at best. It has been converted to 12v, had the clutch replaced ten years ago, and had an engine rebuild in 1991 including new sleeves and pistons, new bearings (minus camshaft) , and a valve job including hardened valve seats.

It has a factory wide front, hydraulic lift system, and "three point" (as described by owner)which is I suspect as being a fast hitch.

While running, the engine also will only achieve about five pounds of oil pressure and the owner suspects there being crud in the gas tank, causing the engine to start then stop after a few minutes. The tractor also needs a new ring gear on the flywheel, which I know means splitting the tractor.

I have a pretty good understanding of what the deficiencies are going to mean labor wise, but is the tractor worth buying, all considered, as strictly a collector tractor to be repaired to working condition and enjoyed?

Sorry for the long-winded post, but all input is going to be appreciated and taken into consideration.

I say this without trying to be a smart rear. You better go get it, before someone else does while you are thinking about it. Fast hitch, factory wide front. & $500 asking price = no brainer.

Go for it.Super Cs are great little tractors.

I would not pay more than scrap price and that might be about $500 and then only if you are in love with the tractor. To fix it right you are going to spend about another $3,000 to $5,000 depending on how much you hire out. After that you will have a tractor you can sell for about $1,200 to $1,500. It will be a labor of love. FYI it most likely is a 3-point hitch kit added at some point.

sounds like a good price. the oil pressure is probably a worn lower cover on the oil pump, spend some time with emery cloth and a thick sheet of glass and sand it back flat.

If you can part with the $500 and still feed your family I would buy it. If nothing else put it in the shed for when you want it. If the engine was rebuilt I am guessing the pickup is clogged or the pump is worn.

Oh I'm sure you could find a use for that little girl. A good deal is hard to find, but once in a while you stumble into one...that's how I ended up with my WD-45 (cost me 60 small squares of hay to some horse farmer out by the big river).

On the switch to 12v and the starter ring needing replaced... take the starter to an auto-electric place and have the field windings replaced with 12 coils. I'd bet it still has the 6v coils and that can cause the starter to spin too fast before engaging the ring. I didn't have to change my flywheel ring after installing the 12v windings... it engages fine now where before it would just grind the gears several times before engaging.
BTW, you should get there to buy it faster than a guy to a half price bikini car wash.
