My Super M has a drive gear on the main shaft that has 20 and 39 teeth. The 20 tooth one engages the countershaft gear. The 39 tooth one engages nothing and the gear does not slide on the shaft. So why the 39 teeth, or it is a gear that is also used in some different application? Or am I missing something obvious? All 5 speeds of that configuration are probably similar.

Probably, the pulley and trans cover are off. I replaced a couple of bearings and seals and got to looking at it afterward, and completely forgot about the belt pulley (but what else would cover that hole?) Thanks, I thought it had to be something I overlooked.

Two things, at ;east, can cover that hole apart from the belt pulley gearbox. They would be the Elwood transfer case and the single speed overdrive (or is it the underdive?) that has been shown on this forum in the past. The Elwood does not use the 39 tooth gear. Not sure about the other attachment.
