350 Utility power steering problem

I am having trouble with my power steering, all other hydralic systems work ok. The pump is laboring until I pull on one of the levers. I have topped off the fluid, but seems like it has air in it still. The fluid is also quite warm at the return and supply lines at the reservoir. Does anyone have any ideas?

Do I just crack it open till fluid comes out or what is the correct procedure? I think I have seen it at one time. Someone before I got the tractor had drilled a hole in it. I put a solid plug in it because it used to get warm and start pumping oil out. They had also drilled a hole in the fill plug as well. It seems as though there may be problem that has been there for awhile.

The pilot screen and orifice in the PS priority valve may be plugged or stuck. Look at the system in the parts spread to see where they are located. If it is plugged or stuck it will put the system in demand at all times, and probably not provide enough assist. Jim

Jim, you are dead on. The orfice screen has a hole in it and the orfice had a small piece of rock blocking the opening. I will order a new one and I hope that will take care of the problem. One question though, does the plug on the side of the steering column supposed to have a hole in it or should it be solid?
