Farmall 460 stuck in and out of gear

Yes - that's right - I said it right. After sitting in a field for a few years, the Farmall 460 I bought runs fine and the hydraulics work, but when the engine is off you can shift the gears. When the engine is running, you cannot shift it in or out of gear which makes it exciting if you start it in gear. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to start finding the problem and correcting it? I was assured that the thing was shifting fine when it was parked. Thanks - Dock09

Your clutch disc is stuck/rusted to the pressure plate and/or flywheel. My 44 Massey has done this a couple times. Driving it around with the clutch down has always broke it loose. I have heard of people hooking to disc or something to get them to break loose. It has only happned when it sits to long. With a nice 450 and Super M with power steering in the shed it tends to not get used for farm work. :)

Even if the clutch is stuck you should be able to slip the tractor out of gear while it's running... You can't even do that?

If you can slip the tractor out of gear, it's a simple rusty clutch. Block the clutch pedal down and drive it around a while. It may break loose.

Worst case you will have to split the tractor and replace the clutch.

Thanks guys!! Seems like everyone is in agreement. I will tell my friend who is working on it for me to try the suggestion. Once again - thanks! Great forum. Dock
