McCormick H loss of power

The H starts good but after warming up it seems to not take the gas and causes flames to shoot out of exhaust. I done a compression test with:
dry 150 145 155 145
wet: 160 168 190 150 Could this be a burnt valve? Is it possible needing a ring job? It will back fire out the pipe when you try to give it gas. Some-times it goes into a stall and will not take the gas. I do see a small amount of what appears to be oil burning. Could it be a timing problem? I did set the magneto to where it is on number 1. Any ideas would be a big help.

With those compression figures you definately don't have a valve or ring problem. I would suspect your fuel mixture is too lean or ignition timing is late, or both causing the exhaust flames and loss of power. The first thing I would do is open the power jet in the bottom of the carb a half turn or so. The sediment bowl strainer and the small strainer where the gas line enters the carb may need a good cleaning too. Joe

I played around with the carb setting to see if it changes. No matter where I turn the settings, it did not seem to change anything. I have went as far as turning the jets all the way in to do a start of re-setting. It did not change anything in the running of the motor. Would it be best to take the carb off and do a re-build? I am guessing with the other post, it would not be anything wrong in the head or rings. I will start with the points and timming and to the carb.

Your dry compression readings are consistent and excellent.

The problem is either fuel or ignition related. Backfiring to me says timing or broken advance springs or a worn distributor or the wrong distributor.

I checked the points as it seems to not seat flat. Im going to change that today. I did clean the carb and re-set the jets. The timing was re-set. The flywheel has two marks on it. Do I use the first mark as it is comming up on top dead center? I have a timing light, is that something I need to put on it to set the timing? I noticed the screen in the carb. It is completly round with the one end open. Is this the origional screen?

Yes, the screen may not be the original, but it is correct.
