Oil difference

May be a dumb question, but can you use diesel oil in non diesel tractors. Whats the difference other than diesel oil is cheaper?????

If you look most diesel oil will have an SL rating for gas engines too. No real advantage or disadvantage of any kind.

Before diesel fuel went to Ultra Low Sulfer using diesel rated oil in a gas engine was actually harmful to them - "compression" oils actually had a higher level of sulfated ash while "spark" oil tried to be as low as possible, hence IH's "Low Ash" oil.

You can use a low ash oil (Diesel oil) in either gasoline or diesel engines.
The byproduct of incomplete combustion is ash. The lower ash content
of the oil allows for the oil to be suspended and last longer between changes.

Diesel oils were developed with a higher ash content to counteract the sulfur in the diesel fuel. As the diesel fuel was burned the sulfur in the fuel would combine with water vapor, produced as a byproduct of the combustion, and form sulfuric acid. The acid would attack the bearing material. The ash is there to neutralize the acid.

Gasoline and propane do not have sulfur in them so they do not need the additional ash content. The ash can be detrimental is some engines that have problems with the deposits left when the oil is burned.
