IH farmall 140

I just got hold of a 140 farmall IH. The serial plate on the left side (seated) say 206 J. I can not find a serial number that low for the IH 140 and what does the J mean. It is a 6 volt generator model with an attached three point hitch. Condition is good but does need repainting and some TLC. Motor strong and working.
HELP

Look closer, there is at least one more digit to that number. It may be worn down or covered with paint or crud.

501 is the first serial number for the 140.

J indicates that the tractor has a "Rockford" brand clutch. 99.9% of Farmalls had a Rockford brand clutch, and a Rockford brand clutch will fit 100% of IH models... Why they put the J on there is beyond me.

I have been farming for many years pard and this one has a three point hitch. It may be an after market but it is there. I am still looking it over in that area. Right now I am more concerned about the serial number. But thanks anyway

I cleaned off the number plate and there seems to be nothing there. I am going to try and make a pencil etching of the plate. The J was a total mistery to me also. I looked over some restored 140's at our farm show and non had any letters on them. This will be a good winter project for me. Still looking over this three point hitch that is an aftermarket design. One old timer told me he knew of one (he is 85 and I am 61) but never saw it. Thanks

Lots of folks have made up 3 point hitches for the Super A and 140. An aftermarket one is available from Worksaver. The Worksaver has a bar that mounts to the rear rockshaft for the top link. It uses a short top link. You can do a search and find the Worksaver website and there are diagrams there. As far as I know, IH never provided a factory 3 point for the 140. I used to have one of the aftermarket ones and I got it from an IH dealer years ago. Sold the tractor that it was on.

Beginning with the 100 or 130 the serial number is supposed to be on the left side of the clutch housing, according to Guy Fay's tractor data book. I have never looked at a 140 up close, but the seat is different also, perhaps yours has a Super A seat, etc on it. No IH tractor ever startered with the 200 serial numbers, unless you lucked out and got a prototype or something.

If the engine is original the engine serial number may help to narrow down what tractor chassis numbers it went in. Unless you have something strange.

Tracing back on the orginial owner it was an aftermarket design But he does not know where it came from The unit itself is as rusted as the parts on the tractor but all is in good shape
