IH 5488 shifting?'s

Before I close the deal on this 5488 I have a few questions. It has had the trans updates. It is a early '84 model. I went through all the gears on power shift, 1-2,3-4,5-6, and it shifted up/down, no issues. Shifting from 2-3,4-5, there was some gear grinding it seemed. How long should a person have the clutch in for these to shift into gear no problem? Am I being to easy/slow/ cautious shifting, or should I be putting a littlew more arm into to it. Also, shifting the range into reverse, seemed like an awful lot of grinding, to the point that I thought something was wrong. Talked to IH mechanic and he said he just redid the same model all updated and rebuilt, and it pretty much did the same into reverse. Any thoughts. When you watch the IH promo's from the 80's, they show the driver hitting the clutch for a secong and shifting right down in that time.

I have an '83 model that acts that way as well, more so before it is warmed up good. I have put over 2,000 hours on it this way, and the tractor has 7,700 hrs on it now.

Is there a clutch brake of sorts on those models? I'm not too familiar with the 88 series so I'm just throwing this question out at ya. The reason there is less grinding when cold is the cold oil helps drag the gears to a stop. Jim

All gears are syncromesh except reverse and therefore should be very little grinding of any forward gear and you can shift them when moving. I would make sure the clutch pedal is properly adjusted and you have zero clutch pressure when fully depressed. Not unusual for a little difficulty shifting when cold due to drag of oil in main clutch. Later ones changed the lube to clutch valve for less lube flow on clutch making them better to shift when cold.

You,need to go too red power talk forum. There is a few guys that can answer that and tell you what to look for.I think one is red powerestorer, and dirtboyz they live and breath 88 series.
