Plowing with pics (hopefully!)

Hopefully this works never posted a pic before! Plowing the other day with the ole Farmall 460 and 3-16 fast hitch plow.

The field was in alfalfa/broom grass for 6 years so it was time to plow up and now put to corn. The soil is good black dirt and the 460 gaser deffinetly knew the plow was back there. Plowed in first gear for probalby 95 percent of the field. Second gear was just too much for it. It seems that i averaged about 3/4 acre an hour, probably would have been faster using a 2/16 and ran in second but i don't have that size plow nor bigger tractor with fast hitch to pull this one but either way i had fun doing it.

Matt,What gears are you using? I have a set of 3/16"s semi mount for my 460D but i have yet to use them. Are you using fulid?? Bud.

Brings back memories. Our crop rotation was corn, beans, wheat, alfalfa when Grandpa and uncle Mike had the dairy herd. Doggone old sod plows hard, got to plow it wet to get the shears to pull into the dirt.

looks like fun... Nice straight lands too. Your right rear wheel looks like it needs to be set in just a bit though. Maybe its just the angle, but it looks like there is more ground there than the bottom will cut on the pic from the rear. What shape are your shares in?

Bud i plowed in first gear for most of the field, second was just too much for the tractor. Maybe your Diesel though could handle it as i'm sure it has a couple more ponies being a Diesel. I have fluid in the tires, 2 sets of weights per wheel and right after these pictures i added 350 pounds to the rock box in the front, that seemed to help a bit. As another stated sod plows hard especialy since it's been 6 years, bean/corn ground i'm sure i could plow in second with little problem.

I agree with Sgt. Bull. I have a 311 fast hitch plow, looks like that might be similiar to yours, and I had to turn the hubs around on my 450D to get it down narrow enough to plow right. That also helped the power, too. IIRC, the dimension from centerline of tractor to inside of tire should be 26" for a 3-14" plow.

Just a thought! Looks like fun! -Andy

Nice looking plowing rig there, Matt ! I did notice something different on that #311 plows` gauge wheel- it`s location. I don` think I`ve ever seen the gauge wheel mounted that far back on a #311. They are usually up front ,mounted on the frame. Did you put it back there or did it come that way ? Just curious is all !

Never did get to do any tillage work with Dad's 460, but sure would like to have done some. Dad pulled an IH 3x16" pull plow (don't know the model) and 11 1/2' Kewanee disc in NE Iowa, but our soil was fairly light and mostof it worked easy. All I ever did with the 460 when we visited there was move some round bales with the Fast-Hitch and after dad passed, Mom had me mow the weeds in the pasture with the NI CuttDitioner (sp?). I think one of my nephews still has the tractor.
