rebuilt engine

I have just about completed the rebuild on the c-153 engine in my 444, I have gotten mixed reviews on what oil should be in the motor for the initial start up, I assembled all bearings etc. with assy. lube from the machine shop but they wouldnt speculate on what motor oil I should start with any suggestions from the experts out there??

Use the same oil during breakin that you plan on using when it comes time to change your oil. Hal

As Allan indicates any oil (other than a Zero-30 or some such) is fine. 10-30, 15-40, or any straight weight oil up to 40 wt is OK.
I would use a squirt oilcan and fill the gallery with oil through the fitting threads for the gauge.
Pump till it starts to feel resistance to pumping. (might take 4 oil cans full.
Run it at a variety of speeds for the first 10 hours, never making full power. Then for 10 hours operate it as above including some full power.
Change the oil and filter, then run it like it will always be operated. Jim

It would be best to use a good 10w30 for a while & dont work it hard, then go to a straight 10w in colder temps, or 30 in hotter or hard use, IH always specified LP/LOW-ASH to prevent plug fouling. I worked with a older very experienced shop foreman & he said wasnt so much the kind or type of oil but the lack of it that caused problems.

Make sure you have oil pressure when the engine starts. Did you prime the oil pump before installing it? Hal

Back about 1960 when I started working on engines I was told to use non-detergent oil for break in oil for a few hours so the rings would seat. Sta-lube used to sell a break in oil. This is back when Detergent oil was new. I have not heard this mentioned for years.
