ok guys I was wrong about what I thought was a 404. turns out thaat the model is a 240 utility, no power steering, has a loader that runs off a pump on the pto. engine has been gone through, tires are good, looks like there should be another hydraulic pump? the guy wants 1700 for it , I am looking at a farmall m with loader for 1500. again 7 acres some what hilly but I have been on farmalls all my life how good is the 240?

Both are fine tractors. (I know, not much help, right?) Either will handle most anything you want to do within reason. Remember, the 240 was originally developed with small acreage farms in mind, so that may be your best bet.

Agreed. Most 240s had power steering from the factory even though most never saw a loader.

The PTO powered pump will be a PIA too, everytime you step on the clutch your loader will quit working.

I'd bet more did not have PS, but that's just from what I've seen for sale or in person. Mine has it added aftermarket. The main pump is on the right side of the engine and driven off the timing gears so it's live. It's too small to handle a loader, Fast-Hitch or 3 point [u:514c86ab46]and[/u:514c86ab46] the power steering. If you buy this one, I'd look into moving the pto pump to the front and drive it off the crankshaft... that's the way mine is, so it's live, not dependant on the clutch. That can be a PITA on a loader. You will also miss having PS on these, but as I've mentioned in your other 3 or 4 threads about this, the front bolster gears and steering arm are a weak spot on these.
