One More Christmas Tree Valve Question

I bought a tree valve for my H. It was not used by the PO, and my tractor is in 100 pieces in my garage, so I can't test it to see if it works properly. When the control lever is pushed forward, the spring will return it to the center position like it should. Should the spring also return it to center when the control lever is pulled back? (mine doesn't, there's no resistance/return to "hold" position when the lever is pulled back)Hopefully I explained that well enough...

Probably the INNER spring is badly rusted up in the spool. They tend to take on water thru the top where the little 1/4 inch threaded stud sticks out.

Be carefull tearing it apart.

(quoted from post at 14:28:45 04/11/12) [b:998cc3a2de]It should spring back in both directions. [/b:998cc3a2de]One spring is missing, broken, or gummed/rusted up.

That's what I thought. According to the parts diagram, there's only the 1 spring, and mine is free and working. The entire valve was in a bucket of ATF for a month to free it up.

The spring is free and working. When the lever is pulled back, how does the spring have any effect on the valve body (#9)? The centering spring assy. (#2,3,4) just slips into the valve body, and when the lever is pulled back, the valve body lowers and the spring assy. doesn't go with it because it's attached to the cover (#10).

There is something missing or broken on the stud that sticks through the top with the nut on it.

It has everything pictured in the parts diagram...

Upon further review, part#7 is NOT the nut for the centering assy. It is the "centering spring lock", and it is the missing part.

Does anybody have a pic of the centering spring lock? I can't tell what it looks like from the parts diagram.I'm sure it's NLA. Do I have a $60 paper-weight without it?

(quoted from post at 03:14:43 04/15/12) The centering spring lock,#7 in parts diagram , is
merely a internal snap ring.

What does the snap-ring lock into? There's no groove for one in the valve body.

You have me sitting here scratching my head now. It
has been a while since I had one apart,(have one
laying out in my shed) but there has to be a groove
in the inside of that spool, unless there is a
groove in the bolt. I don't think there is but that
would be the other way of securing the spring.

You are correct. The groove in my valve was filled with rust particles and grease. So a simple snap-ring is all I need?

I went to the hardware store and picked up an internal snap-ring. My valve now works as it should. Thanks for the advice and getting me on the right track!
