Setting points on early H w/delco dist

The points ARE adjustable! Should be either an eccentric screw or a pair of slots (one in the fixed point frame, the other on the plate the points are fastened to) to facilitate setting the points.

To set, first turn the crank until the points rubbing block is at a high spot on the cam. Now loosen the points mounting screw a bit, then use a flat blade screwdriver in the eccentric (or slots) to set the gap.

Be sure to check the gap after retightening the clamp screw to make sure it hasn't changed.

The distributor sits upright (vertical) on the 41 H --- not horizontal like my 44 M. We had to take the set of points we purchased (which were adjustable) back to NAPA with the set taken out of the tractor to match them up. My NAPA guy said that we may need to pull the distributor to set them as does my restoration guide.

I never saw a delco dist that you could not adjust point gap. Most have what looks like a stationary screw the stationary part of the points set over and that is the eccentric for adjusting gap.

ALL points are adjustable. At the very most,I have seen situations where you actually "bend" the contact arm,but like the others are saying,I have NEVER seen it on a Delco distributor.

I've got 2 Hs and 1 M with the vertical Delco distributors. The points are adjustable in all 3 just the same as in any other battery ignition distributor.

Thanks for the help. My buddy is pretty good on engines but he missed it on the points. My neighbor stopped by this evening and we pulled the hood and I actually found the screw for the eccentric adjustment --- and we're off and running. The coil also wasn't plugged in tight causing some inconsistent firing, but we corrected that too.
