McCormick Deering W30

I Have a 1937 McCormick Deering that has a 4 speed gear box and i have read where these tractors may have been rare with this 4 speed gearbox and i was wondering if someone could enlighten on this matter

there were different speed 4th gears available at different times, one was around 15 mph, one was around 10 mph, and I think there was also a slow 4th around 4mph for the steel wheel equipped. The early tractors only had 3 speed transmissions, my 34 has 3 speed. I wouldn't consider a 4 speed rare , the high speed 15mph maybe. That would be exciting with the hand brake !

I have a 1936 W-30 and its a three speed. I have a reprint of the manuals that has parts list and photos of everything on tractor. In the manual it talks about the four speed and at some point in time it replaced the three trans. The manual only talks about one four speed.

I have a 39 W30 that came from the factory with rubber tires. It has the fast 15mph 4th gear.

If you have one of these tractors, yes, the hand brake won't lock the tires, but it does help. We removed the top of the transmission one day to replace the band material (which had worn away). About 3 hours to get into the transmission, 1.5 to replace the band, and 2 to put it back together, but well worth it.

On my W-30 it had a plate showing where the gears were for a 4 speed.. If you removed the plate it showed the places for a 3 speed transmission.

My W30 was made in 1937 and has a 4 speed transmission. I think they were all 4 speeds starting in 1937 so if that's the case they aren't that rare.

I spent many hours driving a W-30 with the 4 speed transmission (the 15 MPH 4th) and I never felt unsafe at full 15 MPH. Of course traveling in 4th was only a very small percentage of the time the tractor was being used.

4 speed ball bearing tranny was standard equipment in October 36 (this is a 37 model as they changed in November) starting at WB-15061, it could be equipped with an optional 10 mph high gear. At WB-15105 the optional 15 mph high gear became available for rubber tires only.
