Push rods on a 1947 H

What is the down-side of replacing push rods in a random order? I had head shaved and valves ground about 20 years ago, sitting in a plastic bag all that time. I just retired and thought it is finally time to put the old gal back together. However, when I took her apart, I did not record which push rod goes where. I assumed the tolerances on these old tractors allowed for shade tree mechanics like myself. No?

No problem, but you should reset valves after running long enough to get warm as those push rods will work their way into place. You can usually prove this out pretty easy by , running an engine for a while, check the clearance on a given valve with engine turned to proper position for that valve, then just grab a hold of that rocker arm and move it taking up the clearance. Now, recheck your clearance. If every thing is not brand spanking new the clearance will most likely be different. That is why you run them, check clearance before even touching the rocker arm as it has found it's running home. OH, .017 on an H.

pushrods don't really care where they are. Lifters and valves do - but with the pushrods it doesn't matter.

While you've got them out - it's a good idea to roll them on a flat surface - like glass - to make sure they're straight.
