400/450 rear axle?

Are they the same? How hard are they to change?

Everything is heavy, othewise job is straight forward. Remove the trans/diff cover and you can see everything.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVES THE COVER!!!!!!!!!

1. Remove Oil. (duh)
2. Remove PTO (Fender and Drawbar as well if housing is to be removed)
3. Remove the four bolts that hold the bearing/seal cap on the end of the axle.
4. Make two studs by cutting the heads off two 5" bolts. Place them in the top two holes of the bearing/seal cap.
5. Remove the bolt that bolts the bull gear to the axle. Remove washer and put the bolt back in the axle.
6. Find/Make a spacer the right length to go between the two bolts that hold the bull gears on the axles.
7. I Think they take a one inch wrench. Use the open end of the wrench to hold the bull gear bolt on the axle you are removing. With the axle jacked up, spin the tire to use the bolt threads pushing against the opposite side bolt to push the bearing & axle out of the axle housing and off the bull bull gear. As the bearing/seal cap comes out of the axle it will ride on the bolts turned into studs. You may need another spacer and to take "two bites" to get the axle off the bull gear. Once the bull gear is off we have always had them come apart fine. Obviously remove the tire and wheel and wheel center at this point. I recommend freeing them up before you take anything apart. We just did one the other day. My Dad did his 450 years ago and replaced the entire axle housings and axles with 560 axles and housings becasue he had a bearing out and the 560 setup is suppose to have a better bearing. He has also replaced the innner axles bearing on his 400 years ago this way. He did not even remove the drawbar or fender.

I am aware of that. I prefer not to work thru a small hole, and also to be able to see what I am doing. When I remove the axle it is part of a restoration and I need to check everything anyway. I have removed and reinstalled 8 of them, both axles on a C, SH, SM, 460. It's fairly simple.
