My Farmall C is currently equipped with a 12 volt alternator which works fine but doesn't have that original equipment look. I have a spare 6 volt generator; is it possible to convert it to 12 volt ? I would like to make the tractor factory original as much as possible.

YES its possible to convert an old 6 volt genny to 12 volt with good practice and good engineering NO REAL PROBLEM.

I have even used a 6 volt genny to charge a 12 volt battery simply by using a 12 volt Voltage Regulator and it never caused a problem NOW before anyone has a calf Im NOT saying thats engineerign correct or good or best or Im advising it as an engineer or that it charged at a real high rate or that the fields werent drawing more current then designed for,,,,,,,IM ONLY SAYING IVE DONE IT AND IT WORKED OKAY.

You surely can do it, but it is probably cheaper to sell it and just buy a 12 volt generator in its place.

So why not just go with the original 6v stuff as the C sure doesent need 12v. Now if you had an H or M with hopped up engine different story but the C will start and run just fine with 6v.

The problem with just buying a 12 volt generator is most of the Farmalls used a generator with a longer then normal armature shaft to allow use of the adjustable pulley. If you fins a 12 volt generator with the extended armature, go for it.

you don't have to have a 12 volt gen, a 6 volt gen will work it's capable of producing 17 volts, use it with a 12 volt reg, contrary to some belief's this type setup will work i have one and know of a couple more ,draw back is you still have a gen system that charges none or very little until engine is about one third throttle, where as and alt will charge at low engine speed once excited which i prefer

I have a 6 V generator and a 12 V regulator on my Framall H and it's working great at 14.4 V.
