Parts Look up question

I was looking up the part number for the front adjustable axle on a Farmall 340 at the Case IH online parts store. It lists two different parts numbers. Says one number is for "Unit A" and the other number is for "Unit B". What the heck does that mean?

It looks like 2 different tie rod assemblies could have been used on the wide front. Seems like the only difference in the 2 assemblies is the tie rod tube (#4). Either tube should work.

This happens many times on the computer parts catalog that's available for public use. Someone forgot (almost every single time there's a "unit a, b, c, etc.) to put the explanation of what the "unit a", etc. means. The dealer's version, paper book, and microfische have the explanations.

Without the paper parts book for the explanation, my guess would be that the tie rods were sourced from multiple suppliers, and perhaps the parts won't interchange between them.

That can't be right, either. They show 2 different center tubes and 2 different knees/extensions, too.

As long as the male threaded part of the tie rod (#2) is common to the 2 different assemblies, either female threaded tube will fit. Just adjust in or out as necessary. The knee`s being different shouldn`t have anything to do with it. Both versions show they use the same steering arm/tie rod end, so threads there will be same there as well. If I remember correctly, I got my 340 Farmall tie rod tube from A & I tractor parts catalog.

Unit A and Unit B or some similar designation are in all IH parts manuals, sometimes it indicates a serial break, sometimes it gives another explanation. Although I use their website, for anything that has to be correct, I am glad I have the paper copies.

Unit A is a 50 inch tread wide front. Unit B is a 58 inch tread front. Think that measurement is at the narrow setting and center to center of tires.

Thanks for all the info and help. Learned the answer to my specific "Unit A, unit B" question and now also understand why I didn't understand. (cause "unit A,B" is not explained or mentioned on the Case IH parts look-up website).
