farmall m vs. international 404

ok I am now down to 2 tractors the m with a wide front and loader or the international with a loader the M has power steering, not sure about the 404, given seven acres ,some plowing , horse manure cleanup ,moving dirt and rock, plowing snow what would be the better buy, price is within 400 dollars. used to have ford 8n and farmall row crop 300. some hills .

Rated HP, the 404 is supposedly more powerful than an M, but the M will work circles around the 404.

HOWEVER, the M is not a great utility tractor. 404 would be much better for general chores, and it can pull a 2-bottom plow okay.

Price wise, the M sounds like it might be way overpriced.

404, hands down* Live power, live hyd, two way, better loader...the list goes on and on

* Unless the 404 is that junky that it is super cheap.

Like before, if the 404 has "factory" power steering, the one with the two cylinders on the steering arm under the front bolster, go for it. If it has a torque generator instead of the factory cylinder type, you could have front end problems with the weak bolster internals and the steering arm. What kind of loader does it have? The Wagner-IH 120 loader is a "pipe frame" and although it's fairly heavy for a pipe loader, there are better more modern ones out there.
If everything is good mechanically on the 404, it will be better for your purposes.
BTW, I don't believe the 404 has live pto... it's basically the last in the series of C-CS-200-230-240 and none of them had live power, but do have live hydraulics.

Thanks, I'm not an expert on the baby tractors. I was assuming they had it since the big boys got it by the hundred series.

I was surprised IH didn't have live pto by the time my 240U was built in '58... seems they were behind the competition in that respect on the smaller tractors at that time.

The original paper 404 parts manual shows a live PTO setup but it is crossed out with "Not Available".
