Super A brakes

My 51 Super A needs both brakes. I'm starting on the left side (same side as engine) Got tire and rim off. I took the six bolts out of the center hub but can't get it and weight off. Am I missing something? Would I be better to drop the weight and leave the hub on when I pull the axle? I don't want to break any cast by beating to hard. I have a cherry picker to help. Thanks and Happy Easter.

I did the right side (side without weight). All I can say is that it is heavy enough, with the weight on it's gonna be even worse. If you have it rigged properly you could certainly do it with the weight on, but it would be awkward. keep in mind that the whole thing will want to rotate since it will be unbalanced, again, proper rigging needs to be used. I also recall it being awkward to put back on due to the weight. Once you have the bolts out, all that is left are two dowel pins which might be stuck. I believe there are some gaps on the bottom that you could do some prying on, but as you said, you don't want to break the cast.

No need to remove it just use the cherry picker then get the bolts out holding the final to the tranny they do have dowels so you will need to work it loose some before it will clear the tranny. You mite want to replace both seals while its apart. The brake drum will need to be removed to get the diff shaft out thru the plate on the final to replace the outer seal.

Ok thanks. Is the hub suppose to come off once the 6 bolts are removed from the center? It doesn't budge a bit.

Also, If I leave it as one piece should I remove the weight also?

If you are talking about the bolts that bolt the center to the axle, yes the center, weight, rim and tire can come off all together, just be careful with it.

Ok I will just leave it attached. I tapped around on it for another hour yesterday and it will not go apart. There are 4 bolts behind it holding a cap behind it. Do they need to come off too? I just can't believe rust would hold this tight.

I was also told over the weekend it is really difficult to get the axle off the housing. Is that true? I know it hasn't been apart before. What is the best way to get them starting to separate? Is it ok to work a chisel or a screwdriver between them to get it started?
