does anyone know if these tractors handle a loader well? Can you change them to live hydraulics? just looked at one for 2000.excellent rubber and nice loader.

The tractor does have live hydraulic. It also has the possibility of front driven hydraulic accessory pump (live)
it does not and cannot have a live PTO. I would sa go for it unless you need live PTO for bush hogging etc. Jim

I have a loader on a 240U which is the predecessor to the 404 and very similar. The steering on these is a little weak, but as long as it's not overloaded or used a lot, it should be okay. My steering had been rebuilt before I got it and it needed it when I bought it, but I found used parts. I would not want one without power steering... mine has a CharLynn unit and it robs enough flow from the live pump that I lose my 3 point below about 1/3 throttle. The factory PS on a 404 is different than on a 240u as it has cylinders on the steering arm, where the 240U factory is a torque generator which functions like the CharLynn. This 404 system would take a lot of load off the weak steering sector.
My loader is on a crankshaft driven pump. Loader is a Wagner-IH 120 which has the reservoir in the loader frame. It is capable of lifting more than I want to lift.... it will pick the back wheels off the ground.
