IH 595 power shift

I run the tractor with Power shift switch in High nearly all the time. When starting off, sometimes after about 5 seconds tractor surges forward as if PS has just been put into High, though the switch has not been touched. Not sure if problem is with PS or clutch. Any advice would be welcome.

I looked at the parts diagram and from it I surmise it is a two speed countershaft style hydraulically applied intermediate transmission. (never have seen one) two things. The hydraulic control system pump, filter, or suction system might be causing a low pressure situation that then stabilizes and shifts the system into high range.
In my experience using a device as intended (often and correctly) keeps them operational.

This forum and site deals with older tractors, yours is spiffy new compared to Farmall H tractors. We may not respond beyond this do not take it personally, we might not know. Jim

Hi David, the electric power shift button replaced the mechanical T/A lever on the 74/84 series tractors. The switch controls a solenoid on a hydraulic pressure valve that control hydraulic oil flow to T/A clutch pack. I would check electrical connections from fuse panel to switch to solenoid.
I am not sure if LO T/A is with switch open or closed. You could try disconnecting switch and see if tractor stays in one range all the time or if it has same problem.

How many hours on tractor?

Yeah I know it is only 18 yrs old but I rang the local service man a year or so back about free board on the clutch and he could not remember much about those "older" tractors. Many models have come and gone since. Tractor has 950 hrs and trans oil & filter have been changed to spec. PS works perfectly in every other way. It is only a very intermittent thing but if it gets worse I may have to investigate oil pressure or solenoid I am guessing. thanks for your help.

The 85 and 95 series (and later 30/40 series utility tractors) from Case are the same tractor as the 84 series IHC with some updates, mostly cosmetic. The switch runs the torque amplifier.

Hi David, spent all afternoon on my brother's 3230 which is same as 595 but a few years newer. I tried to look under battery to see if I could see the T/A solenoid but with 2250 loader on his tractor it is very difficult to see under there.

I would check electrical connections first.

Thanks for that Jim. It is encouraging to know the solenoid is external and not buried in the bowels of the transmission.

Hi, it have a neutral/dump switch on the clutch pedal, that switch put tha TA in low side when you depress the clutch to make a gear shift. Sometime, when you press on the pedal, the switch stuck all the way in and go out after few second. Check that first. Bernard le mécano

wow the plot thickens. Didn't know it did that. Presume it works off the same switch that prohibits me from starting the engine unless the clutch is depressed. Thanks for your help.

Bienvenue Bernard,
We have missed your expertise on the 74/84/95/30/40 series tractors. My brother's 3230 has the same problem, it is very hard to change between Lo and Rev, his solution is to leave it in Lo T/A when he is using the loader and shifting gears a lot.

There is another post from an owner of a 584 without T/A and with the new style H pattern gear shift having a difficult time shifting into Rev.
Do you have any advice for him?

Merci for the info.
JimB

Hi David, I looked up part on caseih.com for 3230 and there is a different part number for the Start/Neutral Switch for tractors with power shift.

Item 27 231261A1 NEUTRAL START SWITCH
SWITCH plunger, 3/4 In NC, 2 speed power shift

thanks Jim. From that I assume that the TA dump switch is activated by the start retardant switch on the clutch pedal. Thanks again.

Hi, make sure to depress the clutch enough to engage the switch, or may be that switch is bad.For loader operation, the best is running in LO side TA.Bernard le mecano
