Case-IH parts web site - Hour meter and air pump

Browsing the Case-IH parts site, looking under Farmall H - Attachments, the attachments include front and rear weights, muffler and air cleaner extensions. A couple interesting attachments:
A Farmall hour meter, it looks like from the picture it comes with a mounting bracket, don't know where it would mount. Also a Pneumatic tire pump. It looks from the diagram that there is a length of steel line, a pressure gauge then a length or rubber hose, I don't see an actual tractor mounted pump though. Anyone see a farmall hour meter or air pump?

Tire pump attachment went in the spark plug hole. Electric hour meter used a sending unit in the oil gallery. Meter sometimes mounted in various places. Also a mechanical one mounted to a different from standard front engine cover.

So that explains why there is no pump in the picture, a tire pump that goes in the place of a spark plug, now that is pretty darned cool.

If they had the tractor run on 3 cylinders they would have pumped an air fuel mixture into the tire. They must have turned the fuel off, let the engine stall, then used the battery and starter to pump the tire, that sounds less cool.

Used to have one back in the day, was pretty slow pumping. Since its a H I don't think they had a mechanical hour meter attachment.

In the late forties my dad bought a new tire pump that replaced the spark plug. From a Gambles store I think. It sure worked better than the old hand pumps.

Re, air pump that went in place of a spark plug.
We had one back in late 5os and the valve part that screwed into the spark plug hole had a one way valve that would open on the intake stroke so most of the air sucked into the cylinder was gas free.
We used it on our JD 420 as the 2 cyl had a larger displacement per cyl.

My dad had one of those spark plug air pumps. Kind of crude by todays standards, but it worked. We aired up a bunch of tires with it. Not too many farmers owned portable air compressors back in the 40s and 50s, and when the Farmall H was introduced in 1939, there were a lot of farms that didn't even have electricity yet, so that spark plug air pump was a very handy tool to have around.

And yes, the engine did run while it was being used, but it ran on only 3 cylinders because the air pump was occupying the hole for plug #4.

If I remember right the plug air pump came with a couple adapters for different size plugs. Dad used his on a 48 Chev car and it had a real small plug hole size. You had to have motor running to get the compression.

Update:
I emailed some of my hunting buddies, telling them about the spark plug hole air pump. My brother in law said he though the had one in his garage, called me back and he has an IH engine air pump still in the box that he's had for 30 years and doesn't remember where he got it!
