Farmall H and M Front Wheels

The rims on my 1939 Farmall M (Serial FBK 2486 X3A) are different from my 1940 Farmall H and 1947 Farmall M rims. They have a single lug on the inside of the rim, which fits into a slot in the hub. The normal three lugs hold the rim in place. Also, these rims will not fit on the Farmall H or later Farmall M hubs. Does anyone know if there was an early type front rim or if this is one of those alterations made by IH Australia?

There were at least two types of wheels available for letter series, adjustable width and non-adjustable.

The adjustable width have three loops (replacement rims have flat tabs) welded to the rim, offset to one side. Flip them over, and mount them on the inside or outside of the hub to get 4 different tread widths up front.

Non-adjustable have nothing on the rim. They fit on the hub and are held in place with three clamps.

All three of my Farmalls have non adjustable front wheels. I can interchange the front rims on the 1940 Farmall H and 1947 Farmall M, but the front rims from the 1939 Farmall M will not fit either of the other tractors. They look identical, but for a small square tab on the portion of the rim which sits over the hub and that the rim centre is about 1/32" smaller in diameter than the rims on the other tractors. I'll remove it and get some photographs in the next couple of days. It all looks genuine…

Hi SAD

the rims with the square tag are an OZZIE wheel , the square tage is to stop the rim from spinning, it is possible to use a rim without the tag on a center that has the notch in it , all the AW7D and 554 have the notch front wheels , it is also used on all the pressed steel rim rear wheels its the only way of stopping slippage as they are a driven wheel.
if you have a AU tractor that has a front wheel without the notched hub -it has simply been replaced at some time (as when they are left to rattle around loose it will destroy the hub enough that you will not be able to keep rims on tight) you will notice that most IH wheels parts that are made in AU have AP on the casting numbers somewhere...pat

Thanks you! That explains the situation. I notice that the Farmall H wheels, without the square tag have moved on the hub, but the Farmall M wheels with the tab have not. Interesting that there was an IH decision to fit the tabs for Australia, but not in the U.S. I found the relevant page in the Farmall AM book for the front wheels. Picture attached.
