Super A governor problems

Hello everything,

For a while now, I have had some governor surging problems. While I know that adjustment of the carburetor and ignition can cause surging or galloping, I can clearly see the governor arm moving back and forth as it is hunting for a setting.
I took apart the governor and nothing seemed excessively worn, I replaced the bumper spring (old one was broken) and replaced the large spring. Otherwise, I just cleaned it up and put it back together. Now it is surging at nearly any rpm above a slow idle. I have played a little more with the bumper screw but it seems to make little difference.

What do you guys think?
Thanks

Well would you believe about 80% of gov. problems are in fact carb problem and if the carb is to lean or to rich they will do just as your having problem with

I've been through the carb twice and made sure that the massages were clear and everything looked okay. If i manually control the carb, the engine runs fine, however if i let the governor control it, it begins to surge.
My throttle respond is also poor, only large changes make a difference.
How can I go through the govenor to make sure it's functioning properly?

With the engine running at a moderate idle or low
idle, screw in that bumper until the engine speed
increases. That way you know you are in the range of
the governor controlling the speed. In other words,
you can't really tell if that surge spring is
actually touching the governor arm inside or not.
Did you use the correct spring for replacement.

on my A, just put new springs, roller bearings, seals. another parts co, i got a governer assembly.with all these new parts, kinda pricey, now it dosnt surge and it runs faster than new. cant beleave it myself. good luck

I agree. If adding a whiff of propane into the air intake at the carb makes it smooth out, it was lean. Cheap and easy diagnosis. Use a torch with the mixing head removed to get pure propane. Tight carb bushings in the throttle plate, and linkage with loose rod joints will also make surging. Jim

Tighten the bolt on the bottom of the governer. The I&T manual explains this procedure for correcting surging problems.
