Thi8s has the D282 engine. The cap screws that bolt the flywhl to the cranksaft are showing some stretching in the thread area and new bolts are no longer available. Anyone else run into this and what have you done? Thanks

According to the parts book, the bolts that connect the flywheel to the crank on a D-282 engine 706 have pn. 323979R1. It shows up as a good number on Messicks' website, but they're about $36 each. If they're available, I'd replace them. Someone like Bates Corp. might have some "good" used ones, but remember, you have used ones now.

There are different bolt lengths for different applications of the D-282. I think the 706's were 1.75 inches long.

The torque on those bolts is not all that much and can easily be over tightened, which is probably what has happened to yours. I have never seen one break but of course they no doubt could. I'm thinking 55 ft lbs but don't have my books near me at the moment. Might be 60. One of the first things I found out when I worked for John Deere dealer for a few years was that they pretty much always replace flywheel bolts and I did see a couple Deere's break them all off.

I would go down to the local Caterpillar dealer and get some good quality bolts from them.

They shouldn't be hard to match I would think.
