484 tachometer

Hi Martin,
Is it a D-179 Diesel engine?
Most likely gear drive on the front of engine.
You can disconnect tach cable from gear drive and put an fwd/rev electric drill on tach cable and see if the tach works. Can't remember which direction to run the drill. If tach still doesn't work it could be a broken cable. If you live in a cold climate, moisture will get in the tach cable and freeze and when engine starts it will twist the squared end of the tach drive cable.

The other option is to unscrew the tach drive cable off the back of the tach and start the engine and make sure the drive cable turns. If it turns properly then problem is in the tach and will require a tach rebuild. Someone on this board mention a company to rebuilt tachs but don't remember if it was all tachs or only digital tachs.

Hope this helps

Thanks kindly Jim. I will have a look. It is the diesel, and I do live in a winter climate. It was a cold day when it stopped working.
