cub PTO still not staying in - trans. main shaft?

Hello all --

The '47 cub PTO still won't stay engaged. Renewed PTO pilot bushing, replaced shift lever & collar, checked rear PTO shaft bearing - still staked down and appears to be fully rearward. I still have nearly a half inch of distance between the PTO shaft and trans. mainshaft. I've read that the front mainshaft bearing retainer may be installed backwards or may have failed allowing shaft to move forward. I've never had the trans apart as everything (except PTO) works fine and has for 10+ years, but I'm out of ideas. I would think if the mainshaft moved then gears woudn't line up and the clutch would not have enough room to separate and none of that is the case.

How much of a pain am I in for to check / replace that mainshaft bearing? I assume I need to split the tractor.

Thanks in advance,

You will have to split it to replace the bearing. However, you can easily take the top cover off the transmission and do some investigation. If the input shaft is free to move lengthwise, you should be able to detect it through the top cover.

You will also see that the shaft is splined through the length of the transmission, so moving front to back has no effect on operation of the transmission itself.

You wont be able to see the PTO shaft very good but the splines can be bad on the out-put shaft which can let them jump out of gear under power. Like Jim says remove the top cover for a good inspection. Remember its 60 pluss tys old and you dont know the history of how its been used.
