i have a couple of 450s that seem to be slipping out of time, i have retimed each one several time but it runs for a day or two then doesnt start or even run right, what could be going on in the distributor? just worn out?

If the distributors are not externally "slipping" in the clamp,my next thought would be advance weights maybee sticking???.Next thought ALOT of internal wear in the internal parts??

It definitely sounds like it would be a good idea to take it apart and check it out.

Are the screws that hold the contact points in place staying tight? Are using some lube on the shaft lobes to prevent the points rub block from wearing down?

How far do you end up moving the distributor?

Next time mark the distributor and the mount somehow (soapstone?) and run them until they get out of time. Check the marks.

Thing is, you have TWO tractors that are BOTH doing the EXACT same thing. The odds of both tractors having the exact same problem at the exact same time are slim.

I do troubleshooting for a living and the first thing I look for in situations where two separate units have the same problem is commonalities. 999 times out of 1000, the commonality is the cause of the problem. Please don't take this the wrong way but your adjusting of the timing is the thing that is common between the two tractors.

Worked on a Super C last year, tuned it up. Couple months later , guy says, no power, running warm. The distributor itself had turned. Clamps were not holding even though they were tight. That is unusual though. Usually it is the drive gear stripped the pin in shaft and binding enough to turn for a while. But, I have seen the key on hydraulic pump do the same thing. That was in my younger days and on a 450 gas tractor.

I should have stated that once i get the tractors retimed and running after a few days the distributor will slip and be on #4 to fire insteat of #1 on tdc

For that to happen the distributor would have to rotate 90 or 180 degrees. Can't remember which off the top of my head.

Anyway it would be OBVIOUS that the distributor has moved.

So let me get the story straight... You've got two tractors. After several days of running fine, you put them away one night, and get up the next morning to find that BOTH tractors have "jumped time" exactly the same amount? This has happened repeatedly?

There is no way two tractors are doing the exact same thing, at the exact same time, over and over.

Someone is sneaking on your property and doing this. Has anyone been asking about your tractors being for sale lately? Do you have any mechanic drinking buddies who like playing pranks?
