Looks like I made a mistake about M tractors in past

Posted before that C-248 engines that originaly came in M tractors didn't have C-248 on the block. Going to eat crow, looked at one made the last month of production last week that has C-248 cast on it. Looks to be original with a late M block cast # 6722DJ. Date code 2-11-X. Serial # on the engine is right for the tractor.
Old dogs can still learn something.

I never knew that either. Just proves there ARE exceptions to just about everything.
 
My guess is that since IH was probably casting SM engines at the about the same time, perhaps it helped the people picking up the blocks to keep them separate?
 
Perhaps a late '52 change in foundry procedure? I too don't recall seeing that on an M with the exception being the replacement block I have that was cast in '59.

I had a M block that had a F casting code and had the C-248 cast into the block. Im guessing someone rebuilt that tractor in the early 60's as there were a few casting with F and that is 59 or 60 if I remember right
