Super A Clutch Housing - Interesting Find

Last night I dropped the oil pan on my 48 Super A. And to get the rear bolts out you have to remove 2 screws to drop what to me would be the lower half of the bell housing for the clutch. Which I did and here was all this white light fluffy stuff in there. Almost like cottonseed I would describe it as, or a mouse nest. Any idea why that would be in there? From the factory would it be? I sure can't see why...so wondering if at some point if a mouse didn't get in there.

Then also IH has the gasket for the oil pan, but not the felt lining for that clutch cover, can I just use an old wool sock or something to seal it up, or what would be best to use.

I can get pictures once I am home after work. Thanks.

Mouse nest most likely.

They're more common than you'd think. I don't know how they get in there, but they do.

Yours is not the first, and will not be the last, torque tube to play host to mice.

The cover that goes over the front, bottom of the flywheel, does not need to be sealed or lined, just bolt it back on.

They get in via the hole for the clutch bell crank which is just ahead of the transmssion on the bottom of the clutch housing.

Good living for a mouse, some times it gets warm, sometimes things whir around, and some times it is quite noisy.

Hey thanks for the follow-ups everyone...definitely a mouse nest! The more I dug out and found it smelled just like mice. I was up in the shed more tonight and took the inspection covers/holes out and took a screwdriver and got more out and then blew it out good with air. So was darn glad I decided to drop the oil pan, which thus led me to find this.

Maybe someone can help me with this one, since I already have a topic started. But I pulled the cotter pin and got the oil pump screener that sits in the oil pan off tonight too. There looks to be four clips that hold it on, do you just carefully pry them back/off to get to the screen to blow it out? Or is there another trick to it without ruining it.

That does sound like a good idea. I cleaned the pan out really good, sprayed some WD40 on it I had around and kept working on it and cleaned up nice. Will dip the pump in some diesel good before putting it back together. Will keep it going for many more years, thanks!
