I ran across this tractor at a event this weekend. Man it sits up high. Can you guys tell me more about it, what was it used for, and how rare are they?

Thanks

Mostly used in the South for working sugar cane.Very rare(not very many were made);HIGHLY desireable and sought after. And damn expensive.

There is more info on these at the Red Power Forum. I seem to recall that the total was in the 80's but only 2 are in the US. I suspect a few must be in Cuba. More in Brazil. A collector in Germany has a bunch of High Clearance IH tractors but not sure if any are SMTAVs. His collection mostly came from South America. I wonder what happened to the SMV that was offered from Uruguay (?) on eBay last winter. I think the seller was from TN.

Gotta wonder why it has the wrong seat and coil. I believe the one I saw at a PA auction had the right seat but a long, and very noticeable, paint run on the left side of the gas tank. It has been sold several times (maybe 3) in the past five years. Highest price was around $75,000. The collector from Germany was at that auction. I assume he didn't win it at $43,000.

Tractor was like the regular model but chain drive drop housings were added to the axle housing ends and a arched wide front were standard. Other changes like drawbars, support brackets and rods were used. Gear ratio a little different than standard. Front wheels and rims for rubber used 20 inch tires. Rear could have 36,38 or 44 inch with rubber tires.
Think there was maybe 64 of those built with diesel and distillate fuel models the rarest.
HI crops was the feature tractor at a red power roundup that I think was in TN. Don't remember how many were there. Think I remember 4 to 6 anyway. But with several different models of hi crops there I could be wrong.

64 made sounds right. Did you happen to get the serial # ? or what part of the country you saw it?? I'm lucky to own one and in talking to other owners have only been able to track down about 18-20 of
them. thanks for posting (did have to ck the barn just in case...)

i have seen three different ones at red power over the last five years the one in the pic you have here the guy that owned it let me set in the seat and get a pic of me on it
