Farmall 450 PTO Planetary Gear Roller Replacement

I found that one of the planetary gears on my 450 PTO would not rotate freely no matter what I did. Upon disassembly, I found that the rollers are so badly worn down that there was an inordinate amount of slack between the shaft and the gear, due to the rollers being about 25% smaller diameter than when new. I know this because I got a good look at a new package at the dealer, and I didn't buy them because they list for about 240 dollars. Does anybody have an old set they would like to sell, or better still, can anybody tell me if an aftermarket needle bearing assembly can be used, by boring the hole on the gears slightly larger to accomdate the complete bearing assembly. Thanks.

The hardness of the exosting holes is beyond machining, It would require precision grinding. Your proposition would work if a caged bearing was used. Here is a supplier of loose needles. Jim

Thank you so much, I just called their number and left a message for the next business day. The info about the hardness of the metal was helpful too, saved me wasting time and drill bits trying to drill it out to a larger size!

You are welcome. Careful measurement of the ID of the gear, and the OD of the shaft in multiple locations and averaging them, then subtracting one from the other and dividing by 2 will give the opening size. Rollers should be .0005 to .0007" smaller than this. Jim

I appreciate the help. It turns out that RPG doesn't apparently doesn't list the exact rollers that I needed, considering the wear on the gear itself. However, Torrington makes a caged bearing that actually fits the gear, and of course, the shaft, only requiring a small amount of Loctite to ensure no slippage--the whole solution cost 20 dollars including the Loctite and the tax!
