Ensign vaporizer

I have a 460 Farmall with Ensign vaporizer that won't work right. I put a kit in it, obtained from someone in Oklahoma, after the advise of someone in here. It still doesn't work. The diaphraghm is too thick and not pliant and won't work right. It won't run unless you have the choke clear out, and it won't throttle up. It also leaks propane out when you shut the engine off. That outfit selling those kits for Ensign should be sued, as they don't work. Does anyone in here actually know where to get good replacement diaphragm for the Ensign that works, or do I have to just replace the Ensign with an Impco? I would think some tractor collector would want to restore the Ensign, but you need to devise a replacement diaphragm like the original, that works. The ones from that outfit in Oklahoma sure don't work.

Try your local forklift dealer. They should stock the correct Ensign kit. Or they can rebuild/test the vaporizer if your prefer.

Forklift dealer? Really? Nobody has sold any parts for Ensign vaporizers for 30 years. There is just this person in Oklahoma who has been selling his own replacement parts, but they don't work. I suspect surely some collector of old tractors has figured out how to make a diaphragm that works for that vaporizer, and I would like to hear from him, wherever he is. Other than that, maybe someone has some old Ensign kits on the shelf?

Yeah, the lead in OK is the only one I have ever come across in 20 years of looking. If you got the wrong kit I'd call the man back and try to work through it. He's probably the only man that can help you so you better stay his friend. Or you can buy an Impco.

NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH ANY OF THERE REBUILD KITS BUT I WILL SAY IF YOU DON,T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING THEN TAKE IT TO YOUR LOCAL LPG DEALER AND LET HIME REBUILD IT. HE WILL FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM AND IF YOU GAVE THEM THE RIGHT MODEL lETTER YOU HAVE THE RIGHT KIT.

I tried to use the kits from OK and they just don't work. Wronge material and not a complete kit. Waste of money.
I have switch many IH tractors to Impco. The Impco runs better and you can still get parts.

I spent a hundred bucks on the kit and put it together. It didn't work. I took it to the local old tractor repairman. He said you can't get these Ensigns to work anymore, and he told me to put an Impco or Century on it. I sent it to Welter's Farm Repair in Missouri and Tom worked on it. Got it back and it still doesn't work. So I'm out 200 bucks for the kit and for Welters and it won't work. I'd rather have the original Ensign on there. I know they work fine if you have the right diaphragm on there, but this replacement diaphragm won't work. Surely someone out there has the right material to make this work.

The man who has repaired more of these old propane tractors than anyone around here at Helten's Farm Repair in Wichita says those kits don't work. And the older man Cletus who formerly worked for Heltens says they don't work. Tom at Weltens in Missouri finally admitted the same after it didn't work and I called him up. The original diaphragm is thin and very pliable. This replacement diaphragm is too thick, not the right material. It won't open up to let fuel in, so it will only run when on full choke and won't throttle up much, and it still won't shut off all the fuel when the motor is killed. At least that is how it looks, unless we just don't have something adjusted right.

Hey Doc, I have done 7 overhauls on the Esign vaps, and all worked fine,
. I get my parts from Mike at Steel wheel ranch, about $115.00. If you need someone to help you with it call me 602-908-4868. Ill will help you out.

I can make a suggestion that might help: if you find a slightly weaker spring for the Ensign regulator, you may well find that the thicker diaphragm will be able to respond to the vacuum pulses of your 460. I had a similar problem with an Impco on my John Deere 70, and a weaker spring solved the problem. Good Luck.

Thanks Clifford for your insightful reply. I too thought the material for the replacement diaphragm was too thick. I might try what you are suggesting with the spring.
