Regular Head Gasket

(quoted from post at 05:05:44 03/30/12) Does it matter what side of head gasket goes to the block when installing it? Thanks, Mark.

Not all that familiar with a Regular, but I will say that some head gaskets will fit only one way, and some gaskets are marked "this side up" or "top" or similar.

If no one is gonna buck up and answer Ill try to help.. this applies to other makes but if it has a smooth side it goes toward the block.

they sometimes say this side up, or top, on them . If you are using one from Fordsonhouse or others that dont have any metal in them I don't see how it would make any difference.

The gasket I have is from Fordson House. I guess that I will copper coat both sides and install it. Thanks for the help, Mark.

Are you using the metal clad gasket or the cheaper style? The metal clad gasket has to be installed with a certain side up, while I don't think it matters which side is up on the other style.

most of the head gaskets I have used are marked "this side up" or "up" or "engine side"

If your's is unmarked, then which ever way all the water ports match up with the head and block. If they match both ways, then if I were doing it, I wouldn't worry about which side up. Copper coat and install.

The regular is a low rpm, low compression engine. pretty forgiving. Someone may correct me, but the reason for directional markings on head gaskets is non-symetrical water ports / oil ports / etc. Sent an engine out to be rebuilt, and it came back with one bank on the v-8 with the gaskter installed backwards. Over heated and warped the head because some of the water ports were blocked. Shop made it right, but it can happen.
